Heater Troubleshooting Guide

My heater won’t turn on?

1.     Make sure the power source is good. Plug in a lamp to see if it works correctly, if not, try plugging the heater into a different outlet.

GEN 4, GEN 3 1000, US1000, Signature, 2012 US Personal Model, 1000XL:

The power light will come on automatically when the unit is plugged in. Once the power button is pressed the temperature level light bar will illuminate. Adjust the temperature by pushing the “temp up” and “temp down” buttons.

GEN 3 500/ Personal Heater, 500XL, 500, 1000:

Flip the toggle switch on the front to the on “I” position. The temperature level light bar on the back of the unit will illuminate. Adjust the temperature by [pushing the “temp up” and “temp down” buttons.

1.     It will take a few minutes for the heater to warm up. The fan will start to blow after the heater has warmed up.

2.     If stored in a freezing or near freezing environment, bring the heater inside to warm up for a short while before operating.

3.     You may need to wash the filter under warm water and let it dry. If the filter is not clean, it can cause the heater not to work properly.

4.     Make sure you do not have anything blocking the heaters air flow and you are leaving a 2-3” clearance around your heater.

5.     You can try resetting your heater by turning your heater off, waiting for the fan to stop to ensure that it cools down properly and then unplug it for 45 minutes then plug it back in.

GEN-4, GEN3 1000, US 1000, Signature, 2012 US Personal Model:

If the heater is in the auto mode and it is too warm in your room the heater will not turn on. Try turning up the temperature to turn the heater back on.

My heater isn’t shutting off?

  1. Try adjusting the temperature a few degrees
  2. If the room is still cold, it may not turn off. You might want to press the power button to manually turn it off.
  3. Make sure you have the heater placed along an inside wall. If it is placed on an outside wall, cold air may be coming through the back which will cause it not to work properly.
  4. Make sure you are using the heater with another heat source. If this heater is your only heat source, it may stay on longer and not shut off.
  5. Make sure the heater is placed on carpet or a rug. Any other type flooring can cause the heater to not shut off.
  6. You can also try moving the heater in a different location. If you have a room with high ceilings or a lot of windows it may take longer to shut off as well.

My heater isn’t heating the room properly?

  1. If the heater has only been running for a short while it may need more time to heat the room. Try turning up the thermostat a few degrees on your heater.
  2. Keep in mind if you are trying to heat a room above 85 degrees, the heater most likely won’t be able to heat this high.
  3. Make sure you have the heater placed on an interior wall and you are using the heater along with another heat source. These heaters are built only to be used along with your primary source of heat.
  4. Make sure you have the heater placed on carpet or a rug. Cement, tile, etc. are porous surfaces that can absorb a lot of the heat.
  5. If the room has little insulation or many windows you may want to move it to a different location to try and better heat your room.
  6. You can also try washing the filter under warm water and let it air dry. Sometimes this can cause it not to work properly.

Why does the blower fan keep running after I have turned off the unit?

The blower fan will continue to run until the proprietary heat chambers have cooled down. After a few minutes the fan will shut off automatically.

Also, for heaters with auto mode: Once the heater reaches its desired temperature, cools down and shuts off, every 3 minutes, then heater will blow 20 seconds of test air to see if it needs to turn back on.

My power cord or plug is hot?

This usually happens when the cord is plugged into a loose fitting receptacle. It can also be caused by overloading the circuit with more appliances than recommended, using an unapproved extension cord, plug adapter, or power strip. This Portable heater should only be used if it is plugged into an electrical outlet that provides a snug and secure fit. If the plug does not fit securely into the outlet, or if the plug becomes very hot, the outlet may need to be replaced. Please contact a qualified repairman to replace the outlet.

Potentially, a dirty or clogged filter can have the same effect as well

The heaters airflow seems to have diminished?

  1. Make sure the power source is good. Plug in a lamp to see if it works correctly. If not, try plugging the heater into a different outlet.
  2. Make sure you have the heater turned on.
  3. The above response does not relate to the question. Airflow directly correlates with the filter.

  4. Make sure you do not have anything blocking the heaters air flow and you are leaving a 2-3” clearance around your heater.
  5. You can try resetting your heater by unplugging it for 45 minutes then plug it back in. The correct reset is too turn it off, wait for the fan to stop and then unplug. If you just unplug and it was heating, you can damage internal parts by yanking the plug out of the wall.

If the heater is in the auto mode and it is too warm in your room the heater will not turn on. Try turning up the temperature to turn the heater back on.

How do I clean my filter?

Wash the filter under warm water and let it air dry.

*Step-by-Step

1. Press the tabs on top of the filter cover to release and pull it straight out.

2. Run warm water over the filter, the opposite direction of air flow, until water runs clear. The filter might excrete some filtered residue, be cautious not to drip on any stainable surfaces such as carpeting. You can also soak the filter in warm water with a small amount of mild dish soap (do not forget to rinse with water after soaking filter).

3. Shake the filter over a sink until excess water is removed and allow it to drip dry completely before reinstalling. Do not force the filter to dry using an alternative method.

4. Reinstall the filter to the rear of the heater by pressing the tabs and positioning the filter back in place.

We suggest you clean the filter every 2-3 weeks or as needed. This can depend on how often you use the heater. A clogged filter will cause the heater not to work to its full capacity or it may cause the heater to completely shut down.

Optional feature: Operating the heater without the filter will in no way will harm or alter the operation of the heater. If you have allergies and/ or are sensitive to dust, the filter should be used. Therefore, if you are not sensitive to dust or do not want to clean the filter regularly, you do not need to use the filter.

Why does it sound like the fan is moving slow?

GEN3 500, GEN3 1000, Signature Series, US 1000, Gen 4 1000 and 2012 US Personal Model:

In the Energy Savings Mode (Auto) the fan will slow down once the temperature is within two degrees of your setting to help maintain the current temperature while using less energy.

GEN3 500 or Personal Heater, GEN 3 100, 1000XL, 500XL, 500, 1000:

The heater may be cycling or shutting down.

How do I reset the heater?

Make sure you turn off the heater first and wait for the fan to stop. Unplug the heater for 45 minutes to reset, then plug it back in. I would recommend changing the reset to a full hour since newer models require 1 hour to restore factory settings

How often should I clean the filter?

The manufacturer suggests cleaning the filter every 2-3 weeks. However, it does depend on the environment the heater is in. we suggest cleaning it more frequently like once a week if the unit is ran continuously. Rinse the filter the opposite way of the airflow and let it air dry.
